How to Make the Most out of Your Graphic Designers

Businesses are turning to talent outsourcing, and booking a graphic designer online to get your creative needs done immediately is becoming more and more normal and in trend in the new normal.

That’s why we list helpful and practical ways on how you can make the most out of your graphic designers, especially when you work with them only through online channels.

1. Build Rapport

Building a bond or rapport with the person you’re working with will foster a good work environment, trust, and establish a team mindset. It will serve well for your processes and the quality of the project’s output.

PRO TIP: Connect and talk to your designer, as often as possible. Graphic designers and creative people tend to process things inwardly. So they appreciate someone who is exerting a bit of an effort to get to know them and to get them talking. Be friends with them, be in touch with them, and see them open up and eventually trust you more.

2. Appreciate them

A good appreciation goes a long way. Yes, a client pays them in order to perform, but you have to understand that appreciation to your designers (or any employee or subordinate or team member) is like water to plants — you give them this in order to grow and improve.

PRO TIP: To see a better outcome, you need to let them know if they did good and communicate what you liked about their work and give them feedback on what are the things they need to enhance and improve.

3. Gentle Feedback > Harsh Criticism

There may be times when your designer would not meet what you needed. If that happens, just gently give them feedback and tell them your concerns, but in a nice way.

For example, instead of directly saying “Why is this not achieved?” or “You did not meet the requirements,” you can ask the designer about the challenges and concerns that they might have, and then tell them your concerns nicely.

PRO TIP: Layer your feedback or criticism with a <positive-negative-positive< pattern of communication. First, appreciate what they did good and what you like about what they did. Second, ask them their troubles, gently tell them your concerns and what do you think they should improve. And third, offer to assist them or a simple remark that they are getting there would be good. These simple ways to communicate your concern will contribute to both their growth and the quality of their output.

4.Help Them Arrive at the Finish Line

Comments, feedback, and communication are nice, but giving them a helping hand to achieve the goal will make for faster delivery of the output and good teamwork.

Remember, two minds are better than one. It is much better and faster to help each other and improve the work to its best quality.

PRO TIP: Offer to provide them all the resources that they need — files, pictures, pegs of the art you want to be done. And tell them they are doing great, and they are getting there. As much as possible, end on a positive note always and assist them in accomplishing the task.

5. Respect their time

Designers would need ample time outside of work to rest, study to improve their craft, and exercise their creativity freely. And clients need to understand that designers can only work for 8 hours in a day to maintain an optimized creative mind that will be beneficial to maintain the quality of their work.

PRO TIP: Scratch the idea of subjecting your designers to overtime. If it is only urgent and needed the same day, then simple adjustments may do. Otherwise, changes that would require conceptualization and brainstorming should be saved for the next day’s work. This will avoid burnout for both you and your designer.

6.Keep in Mind that They’re Humans too

Communication is done online so there is a notion that everything is instantaneous, and it can be easy to forget that there are human challenges that can arise (i.e. art block, lack of inspiration, burnout, home errands) in working even with a professional graphic designer.

It’s better to keep in mind that you are working with a human, too. Designers are not machines that can produce creative work in an instant. They need to process the work, they need to have space to exercise their creativity, and also enough support from their clients and team to be able to produce impeccable results.

PRO TIP: Just understand their circumstances. Set realistic deadlines and communicate your needs in a nice way. Appreciate their job well done, and show that you are at least accommodative, if not outwardly caring toward them. How well you treat your designer will reflect on their creativity and their output.
